Asahi Kasei Embraces the Future Through Sponsorship of CNN Theme Week 'On Japan'

In the theme week ‘On Japan’, CNN International’s Tokyo correspondent Will Ripley uncovers the latest Japanese innovations set to revolutionize how we are entertained, travel and compete in the sporting arena.

Starting this week, ‘On Japan’ is accompanied by a partnership between CNN International Commercial (CNNIC) and the Japanese global chemical company, Asahi Kasei. This international campaign is the latest partnership between CNNIC and Asahi Kasei, and spans sponsorship of the five ‘On Japan’ TV segments, a special 30-minute program as well as digital elements. In addition, the multi-platform campaign includes a native ad integration on CNN Digital which includes storytelling around Asahi Kasei’s automotive business. The native solution was produced by Create, CNNIC’s branded content studio. Using CNN AIM (Audience Insight Measurement), the campaign is targeted to increase Asahi Kasei’s brand awareness amongst CNN’s upscale cosmopolitan audience of business decision makers, top managers and a curious, technically interested ‘On Japan’ audience – specifically audiences in Europe, North America and Asia.

“Japan Inc”, is a title so distinctively representative of the character of the country. Through a special 30-minute program, ‘Made In Japan’, CNN International’s Tokyo correspondent Will Ripley takes a look at how Japan is innovating and creating for tomorrow, and the evolving reality of what it means to be Made In Japan.

Highlights of the 30-minute special include:

Technology and Innovation

CNN takes a look at how Japan is testing the boundaries of the relationship between humans and technology. CNN’s Will Ripley travels to Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratories in Kyoto to learn about Dr. Ishiguro’s experiments with humanoid technology. He also visits the Robot Restaurant in Tokyo’s Shinjuku, MJI Robotics, and takes a tour of the world’s first hotel run mostly by robots in Nagasaki.

CNN also looks at the global soft power and the business of characters that are ‘Made In Japan’. Starting locally, Will Ripley visits a mascot factory and joins a mascot class to discover the influence and prevalence of mascots in the country. Then he takes a look at Polygon Pictures Inc. that creates animations for Japan and internationally for Disney, Netflix, and Lucasfilms. CNN learns about the creative process behind these characters and why anime represents a huge opportunity for growth in Japan.

The ‘Made In Japan’ label is known for carrying quality craftsmanship. But it is also a reflection of Japanese society and culture. So where does the label stand today? In a conversation with fashion veteran Tiffany Godoy, CNN looks at the evolution of Japanese fashion and how designers are bringing smart design to the runway. CNN also goes into the studio with designer Kunihik Morinaga and explores how he is mixing fashion and technology through the brand Anrealage. It’s an inside look at how the industry is being redefined and carving a new place on the global fashion stage.

Inside CNN's interviews with detained Americans in North Korea

CNN correspondent Will Ripley (@willripleycnn) tells Anderson Cooper (@andersoncooper) what happened behind the scenes of his impromptu interviews with three detained Americans in North Korea.

"Government minders pulled me aside – they were shaking – and said we needed to go right now back to Pyongyang. I was nervous – I didn't know what was happening," Ripley said.

We got in this van and drove to an area of the capital that we've never seen before off the regular route up to this nondescript building. And it was only when we were standing at the front door that they told us...we would be talking with the three Americans who were being held in North Korea."

Here's Ripley's report on his interviews with Kenneth Bae, Jeffrey Fowle and Matthew Miller:
