CNN Digital captures a day in the life of the world’s busiest airport with ATL24

What do you get when you combine three dozen journalists, 8.7 miles of runway, 2,500 takeoffs and landings and 24 consecutive hours in Atlanta’s international airport? A CNN longform project called ATL24.

On August 28, CNN set out on a journey with the airport as their destination. From 12:01 a.m. to midnight, CNN staff witnessed moments of hope, love and loss as well as the layered interactions between man and machine. The resulting multi-media experience draws on the highlights of airports: a diverse slice of society, technology both miraculous and maddening and curiosities hidden in the mundane.

With 58,000 workers strong, Atlanta’s airport is somewhat of a city within a city.  Yet the quarter of a million passengers who pass through that airport on any given day rarely see what really makes the airport hum or cross paths with the people who complete the circuit between traveler and flight. Until now. Segments of ATL24 will also appear on CNN TV and on the Airport Network leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.

So…. CNN Digital created content in the forms of photos, op-eds, videos and an iReport assignment this week for users to engage in a hearty debate on CNN.com, and peel back various layers of the complex topic.

CNN.com draws parallels between war and fashion photos

CNN.com draws parallels between war and fashion photos

In conjunction with New York Fashion Week, CNN examined pictures of war and fashion taken by photographers who document both. CNN’s Director of Photography Simon Barnett plastered them on a wall, saw intriguing similarities and presented them in a side-by-side comparison on CNN.com. Barnett also pointed out to photographers Christopher Anderson, Alex Majoli, Paolo Pellegrin, and Jerome Sessini that their photos had relatable characteristics from different years, locations and subject matter.

The multimedia presentation also draws commentary from author Sebastian Junger, editor of W Magazine Stephano Tonchi and curator of photography at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston Anne Tucker who said the project is “kind of ballsy”, adding color and context to the photographic spread.

Anthony Bourdain urges New Yorkers to #EatDownTipUp

Anthony Bourdain, one of CNN’s newest hosts for 2013, asks restaurant-goers in New York to dine out and tip more money to help local NYC restaurants affected by Hurricane Sandy. In his op-ed on CNN’s food blog Eatocracy, he writes, “Just ‘cause a little DIY place has got it’s power back on, doesn’t mean the bleeding has stopped… so let’s do what we can.”  He explains the hardships Sandy has caused restaurant owners and employees, and how shutting down for a few days takes a toll on the restaurant’s revenue. This article expresses a similar sentiment to the popular support initiative called Eat Down, Tip Up, which has become a common topic on Twitter, #EatDownTipUp.

Bourdain’s show will launch in early 2013 on CNN and CNNI.

The future’s so “bright” – I carry an optimistic flashlight

The future’s so “bright” – I carry an optimistic flashlight

It’s summertime, which means this is the time of year when graduating seniors look at each other and mouth the words: “What now?” To make matters worse, this year’s graduates are tossing off their caps and staring down a uniquely unstable job market. Despite economists’ predictions, long-term unemployment (meaning, being without a job for more than six months) still reaches record-high levels, swelling from 5.1 million to 5.4 million and comprising nearly half of all unemployed Americans.

With hope just a flicker of light in the distance, America’s jobless face a second set of challenges. According to a report by CNN, people out of work for more than a year have only a 10 percent chance of landing a job. On a higher note, the report also points out that most people remain optimistic that they will find employment within the next year.

But the impacts of unemployment stretch beyond one’s personal finances. CNN Health writer Elizabeth Landau reports that an extended period of joblessness can take a toll on self-worth and mental health. However, the article highlights tips and tactics to stay on track, such as exercising and creating a daily routine setting aside time for submitting resumes, searching for jobs and even eating meals.

Unemployment also impacts the family dynamic. CNN Photos has a gallery capturing the life of a family whose father has been facing unemployment for more than a year.

Words of wisdom to young women from Hillary Clinton may make us feel inspired, but as the high school teacher from Wellesley stated when he addressed the school’s graduating class: “You are not special”. CNN Opinion writer LZ Granderson agreed, but softened the blow by saying, “Everyone is special to someone. But no one is special to all.”

The travel bug: Affectionate pinch or poisonous sting?

You’ve chosen the location. You’ve booked your ticket. And now it’s vacation day… ready for a little R&R? Or how about the three R’s: Refusal, Rage and Romance? Let’s face it: thinking about what can happen before you reach your destination can become overwhelming. To sort through your traveling stress, lie down on the metaphorical couch (or imagine you’re on one of those beds in a pretend first-class airline cabin) and get ready to relate to people like you. CNN.com’s Travel series “The Traveler’s Psyche” zeroes in on the whirling dervish of emotions we experience when squeezing into a tiny seat, being trapped in enclosed spaces for too long and even taking a romantic sojourn in the beginning of a relationship.

As you board the plane, you’re probably thinking: who will sit next to me? REFUSAL: The article, “Airline Squeeze: It’s not you, it’s the seat” talks to a traveler who says, “I look at it like I’ve leased this space for …however long the flight is.” So, why should you have to suffer through ill-dimensioned seats with a lack of legroom, all the while staring at the rowdy row-mate spilling into your lap? CNN writer Thom Patterson explores why airlines ignore comfort and he provides a colorful picture with popular complaints among coach passengers. RAGE: Yes, “Air Rage” is a thing, especially in an uncomfortable seat. But statistics show that instances of unruly fliers have risen nearly 30 percent in the last few years, and that common triggers include drinking alcohol and being forced to turn off cell phones, according to CNN’s Emanuella Grinberg. ROMANCE: And then of course, there’s your traveling companion. What are the risks and benefits of vacationing with your significant other early on in the relationship? This portion of the series by CNN’s Katia Hetter chronicles real couples who’ve taken real vacations and have made real breakthroughs as a result of their trip.

So, how do you feel about your next traveling experience? Feel free to soundoff in the comments on any or all of these articles… hey, it could be therapeutic.
