New Day Grows the Most in Cable News in the Morning, Up +101%
CNN once again dominated MSNBC in Total Day and daytime, and several key programs ranked #1, topping both Fox News and MSNBC this month. CNN outperformed MSNBC in Total Day for 35 straight months in the key demographic 25-54 (275k vs. 222k), the longest monthly streak since January 2010. CNN also beat MSNBC by wide margins throughout daytime programming, averaging a +54% advantage in the key demo (254k vs. 165k). The network also beat MSNBC during the day among total viewers (881k vs. 853k). CNN has now topped MSNBC during the daytime for 39 straight months among 25-54 and for 55 consecutive months in total viewers.

During last night’s busy news cycle, CNN ranked #1 in cable news in prime time, easily outperforming both Fox News and MSNBC in the key demographic adults 25-54 according to Nielsen Fast National data. From 8-11pm, CNN averaged 719k, MSNBC followed with 650k and Fox News ranked #3 with 539k. In total viewers, CNN averaged 2.113 million, MSNBC had 2.483 million and Fox News posted 2.380 million.

Last night’s season premieres of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown (season nine, 9pm) and United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell (season two, 10pm) both ranked #1 among adults 25-54 according to Nielsen Fast National data.
In Parts Unknown, Bourdain took viewers on an alternative tour of Los Angeles, focusing on the impact and contributions of its less photographed and often overlooked Latino communities. The episode attracted 368k in the key demo 25-54, +22% more than Fox News’ 301k and a whopping +244% advantage over MSNBC’s 107k. In total viewers, CNN easily topped MSNBC (863k vs. 287k); Fox News averaged 1.680 million. Last night was Parts Unknown’s second best ever season premiere episode among both 25-54 and total viewers.
In United Shades, Kamau visited Washington, D.C. and its multicultural suburbs to hear the stories of immigrants and refugees and sat down with Richard Spencer, the leader of the white supremacist think tank the National Policy Institute. The episode averaged 345k among 25-54, +46% more than Fox News’ 236k and +197% above MSNBC’s 116k. CNN had its most-watched first quarter in 14 years (since 1Q 2003) among both adults 25-54 and total viewers. Among all quarters, the network posted its second highest quarterly ratings in total day (25-54 and total viewers) and 3rd highest in prime time (25-54) since 4Q 2008.
For the quarter that ended on Sunday (January-March), CNN ranked #2 in cable news, with all key programs posting record ratings and growing double digits compared to a year ago. February was another strong month for CNN with the network ranking #2 in cable news, with many programs posting record ratings and all shows growing double or triple digits compared to a year ago. CNN has topped MSNBC in Total Day (total viewers and 25-54) and in prime time (adults 25-54) for 32 consecutive months, the longest winning streak vs. MSNBC in nine years (since February 2008).
CNN’s The History of Comedy (10-11pm) ranked #2 in cable news last night among adults 25-54 according to Nielsen Fast National data. The program averaged 566k, +21% more than MSNBC’s 468k, while Fox News had 673k. In total viewers, CNN averaged 1.442 million, MSNBC had 2.166 million and Fox News registered 3.010 million.
In prime time among total viewers, CNN had 1.567 million, MSNBC averaged 2.084 million and Fox News posted 3.566 million.
Last Thursday's (2/9) premiere ranked fourth in adults 25-54 among all CNN Original Series telecasts, only behind the premieres of Race for the White House (JFK vs. Nixon – 843k; Lincoln vs. Douglas – 634k) and The Eighties (Raised on Television – 598k). In total viewers, the series was #3 among all CNN Original Series telecasts ever. The next episode, "The Funnier Sex" all about women in comedy, will premiere Thursday, Feb. 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
