Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in a 2011 essay for The New York Times Magazine, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.”  Vargas had come to the U.S. at the age of 12 when he was sent from the Philippines to live with his grandparents in Mountain View, Calif.  He attended San Francisco State University, and pursued a career in print journalism, working at newspapers in San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington, DC – all the while, managing to keep his citizenship status secret.

In his emotional journey he chronicles in his film DOCUMENTED, Vargas describes his legal struggles, his new role as an activist to raise awareness to immigrant rights, and his complicated reconnection with his mother, half a world away.

DOCUMENTED encores on Saturday, July 5 at 9:00pm Eastern on CNN/U.S.
