Show host Richard Quest reports on how Chicago is trying to preserve much of what has always made it special while finally realising and embracing the elements that can take it to the next level. The programme explores how Chicago’s unforgettable skyline has inspired architects from around the world to make their mark while prompting Hollywood to flock to this natural film set. Future Cities also looks at the forgotten shoreline of this city, the Chicago River. It was only ten years ago that the city acknowledged the great economic and natural prospects running right through it. From Second City to striving to be first, Chicago is finding its own way to make it an absolutely unforgettable city.

This October, The Gateway visits Incheon International Airport in South Korea to examine the concept of the ‘Aerotropolis’ – the airport city.

Incheon sits on a man-made island in theYellow Sea. With over 33 million passengers travelling through this hub, the airport is planning to expand further and develop its own air city. Host Becky Anderson crosses one of the world’s longest bridges to New Songdo, a $35 billion investment just fifteen minutes away from the airport. The Songdo International Business District is only 40% complete but it’s already home to 18.000 people – and counting.

From Incheon airport, a third of the world’s population is within range of a 3 ½ hour flight. The programme investigates the second biggest international airport for cargo tonnage as it boasts the world’s fastest security process and pioneers the use of cloned sniffer dogs. The Gateway explores how this transport hub is driving the modernisation of South Korea by opening its port to the outside world, issuing a new era of economic development.
