Kentucky Derby Trainer Thrives Following Heart Transplant

CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta tells the story of horse trainer Kathy Ritvo, who trained Mucho Macho Man to his third place finish at the 2011 running of the Kentucky Derby on May 7.  Ritvo had been forced to stop training for six years as she struggled with the symptoms of cardiomyopathy, a degenerative heart disease.  She was able to have a heart transplant in November 2008 and now has what she describes as “a normal life” – her husband, Tim Ritvo, says that she is an inspiration to others with her condition.

This story will be explored in more detail on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 at 7:30am ET on SANJAY GUPTA MD.
