The latest World’s Untold Stories encompasses a story of forgiveness, healing, closure and respect – spanning half the globe and more than half a century.

During World War II, US Marine Marty Connor (pictured above) found himself on the black sandy beaches of Iwo Jima, fighting the Japanese in one of the world’s most savage battles. He and many others left the island with more than just vivid memories, taking away sentimental “souvenirs” from dead enemy soldiers – diaries, photographs and battle flags. But a chance meeting decades later would inspire Connor to send it all back, and then help others do the same. On the receiving end of Connor’s shipments to Japan is Masataka Shiokawa, whose father was killed at Okinawa. These two men, from two countries once engaged in a bitter war, don’t speak the same language, but they have the same goal: to bring closure, answers, and a connection to relatives of Japan’s war dead, who otherwise might never have known the true fate of their loved ones.

May’s MainSail features two brothers who have established a trackrecord sailing the oceans, making them household names in their home country of France. Loick and Bruno Peyron are rarely seen together in any sailing campaign but this year they have joined forces in a bid to lead a French team to victory in the America’s Cup for the first time. Presenter Shirley Robertson (pictured) takes a unique insight to their lives and current project as she joins them from the boardrooms of Paris to the beaches of Brittany.

Bruno Peyron made his name in the sport when he led the first non-stop sail around the globe in less than 80 days, securing the Jules Verne Trophy for a record breaking lap in 1980. He has since won the award three times.  His brother Loick raced across the Atlantic at just 18 years old and has since won world titles including the spectacular ORMA multihulls, the Barcelona World Race and the solo Trans- Atlantic race, ‘The Transat’. MainSail witnesses what could be the Peyron brothers’ greatest challenge yet. While the America’s Cup has traditionally been held in heavy and slow yachts, the next edition will be raced in mutlihulls, faster thean many powerboats, which means there is a better opportunity than ever before for a French team to succeed.
