Plaquemines Parish president: Worse than "worst case scenario"

Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser gives update on levee overtopping from Hurricane Isaac, which could lead to significant flooding.

Nungresser says, “Well, the levees are topping in several locations. We’re trying to get the few people who have stayed beyond, out…. We’ve got a serious situation over there.”

He continues, “Not only did we see the worst case scenario, it got worse than that by this storm just stalling…. So the levees can only take so much. We actually we were in the process of raising the those levees prior to this event.”

CNN Anchor Zoraida Sambolin asks, “Raising it as part of the billions of dollars that were spent on the levees or raising it because of this impending storm?”

Nungresser responds, “This is a levee that is a Parish levee that was left out of the federal system. So we were spending Parish money to raise it to give them a fighting chance. We just needed a couple more years without a major storm and it doesn’t look like we got that.”

Rep. Gutierrez: SB-1070 will be ruled unconstitutional one day

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) explains to CNN’s Zoraida Sambolin why he is opposed to Arizona SB-1070.

Gutierrez says, “[SB-1070 is] all about targeting and finger-pointing a particular community and scapegoating that community. We know that's what they've done. They did it in California under Pete Wilson with Proposition 187 in the '90s, and now, we have a new version of 1070 in our current time.”

He adds, “And I have to say, I think, Zoraida, you and I will have a conversation hopefully sometime at 5:30 in the morning one day and we’re going to find out unfortunately that it is ruled unconstitutional.”

Early Start airs weekday mornings from 5-7am ET on CNN.

When asked by CNN anchor Zoraida Sambolin if they’ve found anything else interesting, Gabriel Lee responds, “Well, we've never really found anything as interesting that I would like to say on the air.”

GOP strategist: finding a fired up Romney supporter is like a game of Where's Waldo

Democratic Strategist Penny Lee, Republican Strategist Joel Sawyer and CNN Political Editor Paul Steinhauser talk with CNN anchor Zoraida Sambolin about endorsements for presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Sawyer says, “You know, finding a fired up Romney supporter is like a game of where's Waldo. I mean, it's that he's the practical choice. You know, he's the choice that you make with your head."

He adds, “But you look at these rallies across the country, and you know, when they were here in South Carolina, Santorum, Paul, Gingrich all have a very passionate base of support, where as with Romney, it's almost like people are resigned to support him. And that's got to be frightening for him heading into these Super Tuesday contests.”

Early Start with Ashleigh Banfield & Zoraida Sambolin airs week mornings from 5-7am ET on CNN.

Coast Guard captain update on Alabama chopper crew search – Early Start

Coast Guard Capt. Don Rose speaks with CNN's Zoraida Sambolin on the latest in a search for 3 crew members missing after a chopper crash in Alabama.

Rose says, “We have multiple boats on scene, divers, we have aircraft up trying to find the three remaining crew…. Hoping that we can find the last three crew members of this helicopter right now.”

He continues, “They were on a training mission shortly after sunset. We lost communications with the helicopter and immediately began trying to restore communications and dispatch resources out to find what they were doing. They were training with two other boats at the time of the accident…. The cause of the accident is going to be investigated. The fog has hampered our search efforts a little bit.”
