CNN Greenlights Five New Original Series for 2018; HLN Adds New Original Series for 2018

 CNN Also Picks Up New Seasons of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, This is Life with Lisa Ling, The History of Comedy, Believer with Reza Aslan, The Wonder List with Bill Weir, and The Hunt with John Walsh

NEW YORK – May 17, 2017 - CNN, a division of Turner, will be adding five new Original Series to its slate in 2018, it was announced today at the Turner Upfront presentation in New York City.  Detroit 1963: Once in a Great City; American Heiress: The Patty Hearst Story; 1968: The Year That Changed America; Kennedys: An American Dynasty and Pope will join the network’s diverse portfolio of award-winning, critically-acclaimed nonfiction programming.

In addition, HLN will add a new Original Series - Unmasking A Killer - to its slate in 2018. This series will join the growing lineup of unscripted original programming the network has been developing in the past year. FULL POST

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown and United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell  Debut as #1 Among 25-54

CNN #1 in Prime Time

Last night’s season premieres of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown (season nine, 9pm) and United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell (season two, 10pm) both ranked #1 among adults 25-54 according to Nielsen Fast National data.

In Parts Unknown, Bourdain took viewers on an alternative tour of Los Angeles, focusing on the impact and contributions of its less photographed and often overlooked Latino communities.  The episode attracted 368k in the key demo 25-54, +22% more than Fox News’ 301k and a whopping +244% advantage over MSNBC’s  107k.  In total viewers, CNN easily topped MSNBC (863k vs. 287k); Fox News averaged 1.680 million.  Last night was Parts Unknown’s second best ever season premiere episode among both 25-54 and total viewers.

In United Shades, Kamau visited Washington, D.C. and its multicultural suburbs to hear the stories of immigrants and refugees and sat down with Richard Spencer, the leader of the white supremacist think tank the National Policy Institute.  The episode averaged 345k among 25-54, +46% more than Fox News’ 236k and +197% above MSNBC’s 116k.  In total viewers, CNN also easily beat MSNBC at 10pm (820k vs. 290k); Fox News averaged 1.236 million. New Edition of Prime Cuts Features Season Eight Highlights with a Preview of Season Nine

(April 11, 2017) Season nine of the top-rated Emmy and Peabody award-winning CNN Original Series Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown begins on Sunday, April 30 at 9pm ET/PT with a Latino-themed trip to Los Angeles.

The eight-episode season also features tours of San Sebastian, Laos, Queens, NY, Antarctica, Oman, Trinidad and Porto, Portugal.

Finding Jesus Season Two also Debuts at #2, Ahead of MSNBC

CNN’s newest Original Series Believer with Reza Aslan (“Aghori Sadhus in India”) premiered on Sunday night (10pm, ET), ranking a strong #2 in cable news among both total viewers and adults 25-54 and #1 in younger viewers (18-34).  Believer outperformed MSNBC by triple digits in total viewers and adults 25-54, and was ahead of Fox News among 18-34.

Believer averaged 787k total viewers, +121% more than MSNBC’s 356k.  Fox News averaged 1.606 million total viewers.  Among adults 25-54, the show posted 304k, a +104% advantage over MSNBC’s 149k; Fox News had 366k.  Among younger viewers (18-34), CNN was top-rated with 81k, +80% more than Fox News’ 45k and a +40% lead over MSNBC’s 58k.

CNN also had the most growth at 10pm vs. the prior four Sundays, up +77% in total viewers, +65% among 25-54 and +84% in 18-34.

The season two debut of Finding Jesus (“The Pilate Stone”) also ranked #2 in cable news Sunday night (9pm, ET). In total viewers, CNN delivered 1.045 million, +188% more than MSNBC’s 363k.  Fox News averaged 2.279 million total viewers.  Among adults 25-54, CNN posted 329k, a +116% lead over MSNBC’s 152k, Fox News had 420k.  In 18-34, CNN was top rated with 70k, Fox News followed with 53k and MSNBC had 38k.

Among ALL CNN Original Series season premieres, Finding Jesus Season 2 ranks #6 in total viewers and #9 among adults 25-54.

This Sunday’s (March 12) episodes of Finding Jesus “Raising Lazarus” and Believer “Doomsday Cult in Hawaii” premiere at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET/PT respectively.

The History of Comedy is CNN's Third Best Original Series Launch of All Time

CNN’s The History of Comedy (10-11pm) ranked #2 in cable news last night among adults 25-54 according to Nielsen Fast National data.  The program averaged 566k, +21% more than MSNBC’s 468k, while Fox News had 673k.  In total viewers, CNN averaged 1.442 million, MSNBC had 2.166 million and Fox News registered 3.010 million.

In prime time among total viewers, CNN had 1.567 million, MSNBC averaged 2.084 million and Fox News posted 3.566 million.

Last Thursday's (2/9) premiere ranked fourth in adults 25-54 among all CNN Original Series telecasts, only behind the premieres of Race for the White House (JFK vs. Nixon – 843k; Lincoln vs. Douglas – 634k) and The Eighties (Raised on Television – 598k).  In total viewers, the series was #3 among all CNN Original Series telecasts ever.  The next episode, "The Funnier Sex" all about women in comedy, will premiere Thursday, Feb. 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

The History of Comedy is executive produced by Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner (Hazy Mills) with Emmy Award winners Mark Herzog and Christopher G. Cowen (Herzog & Company).
