Moving new CNN Special Presentation Explores Hope for Vets Struggling with Post Traumatic Stress
Delon Beckett and Garrett Combs came home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ready to resume the lives of promise they had left behind. For both veterans, within months of coming home, their relationships were crumbling, their children were frightened of their rages, and suicide became a choice they both thought could be a solution for their anguish. Then, a new program that treats post traumatic stress gave them hope. Produced by Soledad O'Brien’s Starfish Media Group in association with MediaStorm, THE WAR COMES HOME, follows the journeys of these two young men who came home from war, and their personal battles to recover from the effects of the wars that came home with them.
The one hour special, THE WAR COMES HOME, debuts Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 9:00pm and will encore at 12:00am, and on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 7:00pm. All times Eastern on CNN/U.S.

Cardinal Francis George, Archbishop of Chicago, talks to Soledad O’Brien about picking the last pope, the selection criteria for the next pope and CNN's impact on the process.
Cardinal George says, “You’re talking about them on CNN and other great networks. And they’re interesting conversations you’re having. You help us. And I must say that the people you’re talking about would be good candidates from what I’ve seen so far. Eight years ago I recall listening to the media and I thought they don’t know who the candidates really are. There are some wild guesses going on. This time somebody’s done his or her homework and I think you’re coming up with good names.”
Starfish Media Group Will Produce Specials and Documentaries for CNN
CNN is entering into a production and distribution agreement with critically-acclaimed journalist Soledad O’Brien, whose new production company will produce long-form programming specials for the network it was announced today by Jeff Zucker, president CNN Worldwide. O’Brien’s company, which will launch in June, will produce three long-form programming specials for CNN in 2014. Those specials will include one of the network’s most successful franchises, Black in America. O’Brien’s new production company, Starfish Media Group, in conjunction with CNN, will act as the exclusive worldwide distributor of previous documentaries featuring O’Brien. She will also host the 2013 CNN Black in America documentary, which will air later this year.
Ariana Williams, ex-girlfriend of Christopher Dorner, details her experience with the accused killer she dated five years ago.
“I’m shocked, I sort of expected it,” Williams said. “I can’t honestly tell you that I would say ‘oh this would never happen.’ When you see signs of someone’s behavior and the manner that, sort of stress-induced type behavior also – I think coupled with maybe how their personality already is, I think it makes it easier to understand why something like this could possibly happen.”
Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien airs weekday mornings from 7-9am ET on CNN.
Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) says he has mixed feelings about President Obama’s State of the Union address. While he heard “more of the same” with new federal spending programs, he liked the President’s call for entitlement and tax reform.
“I was most encouraged about what he said about entitlement reform and tax reform,” said Sen. Portman.
When asked why, Portman replied, “Well, because I think as President, his role is to explain to the American people what’s really going on…. Entitlement programs, as important as they are, are not sustainable in their current form…. And at one point in the speech, he said we need to reform our entitlement programs and it’s not going to be easy. And that’s what the American people need to hear from him. Folks are tired of hearing this notion that somehow everything is fine. They know the economy is not doing well.”
Brent Nutt, whose wife and sisters-in-law are on the stranded Carnival Triumph cruise ship, details the dangerous conditions on board, including limited food and unsanitary conditions.

Photographer Ernest Withers documented the struggles and the victories of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s through shocking and inspiring images that evoke the injustice and the rage of that history even today. Along the way, he himself became an icon.
When Withers photographed the grotesquely mutilated body of Emmett Till, slain for allegedly whistling at a white woman, the photos rocketed across the country and around the world in magazines and newsprint – notably in JET and LIFE magazines, and the Chicago Defender – forcing the nation to focus on that amplified vision of injustice. Withers himself was so moved that he vowed to attend each day of the trial and photograph those accused of the lynching.
After Withers died in 2007, documents secured through a Freedom of Information Act request, submitted by journalists the Memphis Commercial Appeal, revealed that in addition to taking photographs, Withers was also a paid informant for the FBI. A paper trail later emerged suggesting Withers gave the FBI sensitive information on leaders of the Movement, their meetings, and their activities – as part of the FBI’s official, “Ghetto Informant Program.”
CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien tells the story of the secret life of Ernest Withers in Pictures Don’t Lie, which encores on CNN/U.S on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 8:00p.m. and 11:00p.m. ET and PT.
US Marine Corps Captain Zoe Bedell and “Co-Ed Combat” Author Kingsley Browne debate the impact of overturning the ban on women in combat. Bedell, who along with three other female veterans sued the Pentagon over this issue, says that unit cohesion will remain strong through this transition just like it is through the elimination of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Browne argues that the military will have to lower physical standards to allow women to compete because of the “very little overlap in physical capacity between men and women.”
When CNN Anchor Soledad O’Brien references a quote by an unnamed colonel, ‘The army is not a sociological laboratory to be effective, but as we organize, train according to the principles, which will ensure success, experiments, are a danger to efficiency, discipline, moral and would result in ultimate defeat,’ Browne agrees.
O’Brien then reveals that she was referencing someone in 1941 who was referring to excluding black people in the military.
Browne disagrees with the analogy.
