Saturday 22 October at 0530 BST / 0630 CET and 1630 BST / 1730 CET

‘Culinary Journeys’ in October heads to the rainbow nation for an exploration of South African cuisine with the country’s top chef, Reuben Riffel (pictured, right).

Born and raised in the Western Cape, chef Riffel built an impressive reputation at his harbour-front restaurant, the One&Only before becoming one of the most recognisable faces in the country as a judge on ‘MasterChef South Africa’.

Riffel embarks on a journey for CNN to explore a food tradition which unites people across the country – braai.

Meaning ‘barbecue’ in Afrikaans, this method of cooking over a wood fire is a chance for family and friends to gather over juicy steaks and sausages.

Along the way Riffel visits some of Cape Town’s liveliest food locations – learning the art of shisa nyama (meaning ‘burnt meat’ in Zulu) by working the grills at the famous Mzoli’s before picking up spices and sweet treats in the colourful Bo Kaap neighbourhood.

Riffel also travels beyond the city to visit Renata Coetzee, a food historian and nutritionist who has helped to nurture a garden of indigenous herbs used by the native people of southwestern Africa.

Concluding his journey, Riffel celebrate with a braai in the heart of the Cape Winelands: a true appreciation of friends, food and hospitality.

Anderson Cooper 360, Europe’s Refugee Crisis – Reports by CNN’s Arwa Damon

For months CNN’s Arwa Damon and her team followed the unprecedented wave of refugees coming to Europe, moving with them through the corridors of passage, and bringing a sense of immediacy to an unpredictable story with many lives at stake. The team showed exceptional grit and commitment, broadcasting live from all manner of transport as the refugees tried to push on through Europe to get to Germany, their preferred destination. The team’s endurance and skill was best illustrated by their race through cornfields with fleeing refugees, after the migrants broke out of a holding camp in Hungary where they were frustrated at being made to wait. The field team reacted quickly and managed to maintain a serious level of production at a fast clip. This distinctive work helped nudge European leaders to review their inconsistent immigration policies and deal urgently with the pressing needs of the refugees. FULL POST

CNNMoney exposes company that has processed tens of millions of dollars in global fraud

Born out of CNNMoney’s award-winning series that unraveled the massive $200 million Maria Duval psychic scam, a new months-long investigation exposes how a little-known company named PacNet has processed millions of dollars raked in by global mail schemes.

The frauds target the sick and elderly - leaving them with nothing. While con artists perpetrate the scams, PacNet deposits the checks.

As part of their exclusive investigation, CNNMoney Senior Writers Blake Ellis and Melanie Hicken broke the news of an unprecedented crackdown by the U.S. government against PacNet and the companies with which it works. The government says PacNet is part of an international network that has stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from millions of elderly victims.

While PacNet says it has never knowingly processed payments for scammers and that it does everything in its power to prevent fraud, CNNMoney has found that it has repeatedly given scammers the crucial ability to get their hands on money from victims.

In addition, CNNMoney’s multi-part investigation tells the stories of some of these victims whose checks to scammers were cashed by PacNet:

  • In a little more than a year, one 91-year-old Iowa woman sent more than $29,000 to psychic and sweepstakes scammers around the world, according to the Iowa Attorney General. Of the 749 checks she sent, 566 (or around 75%) were deposited by PacNet. The victim was left with nothing.
  • An 87-year-old woman sent tens of thousands of dollars to all different types of scams, ultimately draining the entire balance of a $100,000 reverse mortgage.
  • An elderly retired college professor gave away most of his $5,000 monthly income on one sweepstakes scam after another. Eventually, his son resorted to taking his father’s mail away altogether. “If I was doing it to one of their parents or grandparents, I bet they wouldn’t like it. But they’ll do it all day to mine,” his son told Ellis and Hicken.
