CNN adds to Africa strength with Eleni Giokos appointment

London, 16 October 2015. CNN International has hired Eleni Giokos as a business correspondent, based in the network’s Johannesburg bureau.

Giokos, who joins from Bloomberg TV Africa, will take on a range of responsibilities for the network.  In addition to reporting on news and business stories, she will also work across CNN’s African feature programmes, including Marketplace Africa and African Voices.

Giokos began her career at CNBC Africa, before moving to 24 hour news channel eNCA, where she was an anchor and correspondent.  She then joined Bloomberg TV Africa as senior anchor and financial journalist, anchoring two programmes for the channel.

She has interviewed the likes of South Africa President Jacob Zuma, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, IMF MD Christine Lagarde, and Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson.

Born in Greece and raised in South Africa, Eleni Giokos has a decade’s experience working across TV, radio, print and online media.

As a broadcaster she has interviewed former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama; Senegalese President, Macky Sall; former Tunisian President, Mohammed Marzouki; South Africa President, Jacob Zuma; IMF MD, Christine Lagarde; former Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou; former Zimbabwe Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai; Virgin founder Richard Branson; disgraced Barings Bank trader, Nick Leeson; and ‘Wolf of Wall Street’, Jordan Belfort.

Giokos began her career at CNBC Africa, a specialist business channel, in 2005.  She then became an anchor and correspondent at 24-hour news channel, eNCA, covering breaking news – including the killing of Reeva Steenkamp by Oscar Pistorius, and the Westgate Mall attack – and business stories.

She has reported from key global events such as the World Economic Forum in Davos and the United Nations General Assembly. Giokos  has chaired debates at the World Economic Forum, International Monetary Fund, African Finance Corporation and the Africa CEO Forum. She has also contributed regularly to South Africa’s Mail and Guardian newspaper, worked as a motivational speaker at public schools, and trained aspiring journalism students.

Giokos has an Honours Degree in Journalism and Media Studies from the University of Witwatersrand, and is an International Monetary Fund Fellow – selected to join the programme in 2014.
