Inside the Middle East

Hala Gorani hosts ‘Inside the Middle East’ from Beirut, Lebanon

Wednesday 2 July at 1030 BST/ 1130 CET and 1730 BST/ 1830 CET
Saturday 5 July at 0530 BST/ 0630 CET and 1930 BST/ 2030 CET
Sunday 6 July at 1330 BST/ 1430 CET
Duration: 30 minutes
Hala Gorani hosts ‘Inside the Middle East’ in July from Beirut, Lebanon. The programme meets Kamal Mouzawak, founder of Lebanon’s first farmers’ market and restaurateur, who is using food to empower Syrian refugee women now living in Lebanon. Last year, he created Atayab Zaman, ‘The Delicious Past’, a culinary training programme to help perfect their skills in the kitchen. Gorani meets Syrian women at the school and in their homes, seeing how food is helping these women to remember happier times from their homeland.

Gorani also meets some of the nearly 200 Syrian refugee families who have taken over an abandoned shopping mall in northern Lebanon, and have turned it into a thriving village.

‘Inside the Middle East’ chats to the band Tanjaret Dahget, or ‘Pressure Pot’, a trio of Syrian alt-rockers living in Lebanon who are hoping to make rock music mainstream in the Middle East. They are gaining popularity in the region, and not just for music. Many see the group as a symbol of religious tolerance: one member is Christian, one Alawite, and the other Sunni.

The programme also follows Hafez Nazeri’s Rumi Symphony Project on a mission to put Persian music on the global stage, in the midst of a multi country tour to promote Nazeri’s album “Untold.” More than four years in the making, it is the first ever Persian classical album to hit number one on the billboard classical chart.
