‘Make, Create, Innovate’ airs within Quest Means Business

In this ‘Make, Create, Innovate’, Nick Glass reports from Austria on an invention that has been changing the lives of the deaf, and those with partially impaired hearing.‘A soundless world with voiceless faces’, that’s how one person described being deaf to Ingeborg Hochmair. The 60-year-old Austrian academic has spent her life searching for ways to help the deaf hear once again, joined on her quest by her husband. The pair first met at the Vienna Technical University in 1975, where Erwin asked Ingeborg if she would help him develop the world’s first multi-channel cochlear implant – a device implanted in the inner ear. Composed of two sections; an external processor that converts sound into electrical signals and an internal implant that sends these signals to the brain, their invention was first implanted in 1977. Since then, the Hochmairs have sold more than 200,000 implants around the world through their Innsbruck-based company MED-EL.
