This month, ‘Inside the Middle East’ explores the unique cultural conservation taking place in Jordan, a modern Arab nation with a past that’s been influenced by the Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans, Arabs, and Europeans. Host Jomana Karadsheh visits historical sites across Jordan discovering that preservation isn’t always about building museums.

The programme first visits Jordan, in the ancient city of Jerash, which boasts some of the best preserved Roman ruins outside of Italy. Karadsheh meets a Jordanian theatre troupe with a unique performance – a Roman reenactment in Jerash’s ancient hippodrome that includes a gladiator battle and one of the world’s only chariot races.

Also in the show, Karadsheh heads to Jordan’s arts capital Amman. There she meets the musicians of the Palestinian Youth Orchestra backstage at the town’s Citadel Festival, a concert series whose stage sits on a hill overlooking the city’s ancient amphitheatre.

The programme also travels along the King’s Highway – one of the oldest thoroughfares in the world – to meet the famous Jordanian architect Ammar Khammash. Khammash drives off-road, through the desert and into the mountains, to a hotel he designed as one of Jordan’s first eco-lodges based on the traditional houses of Jordan’s bedouins.

Friday 4 October 1600 BST / 1700 CET
Saturday 5 October 2000 BST / 2100 CET
Duration: 1 hour

The Emmy nominated ‘Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown’ continues its second series in October, this time visiting New Mexico.

‘Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown’ follows world-renowned chef, bestselling author and award-winning broadcaster Anthony Bourdain as he visits little-known areas of the globe, celebrating their rich cultural diversity by exploring food and dining rituals.

Known for his curiosity, candour and acerbic wit, Bourdain ignores the well-trod tourist trails and takes viewers to destinations well off the beaten path.

In New Mexico, Bourdain discovers that the best way to understand the mash-up of cultures that comprise this uniquely American state is by sampling its cuisine – a combination of Spanish, Mediterranean, Mexican, Pueblo and even chuck-wagon influences.

New Mexico is known for more than just its food. The southern state is infamous for drug runners, monster trucks and even extra-terrestrial abductions. It’s also the perfect place to investigate the dark underside of the cowboy dream.

This month’s edition of ‘The Art of Movement’ focuses on sharks. These oceanic predators have long fascinated and terrified humans in equal measure. Despite the shark’s prehistoric lineage, until recently, very little was known about the physiology and migratory patterns of these beautiful and dangerous creatures.

A team of scientists from Ocearch is conducting a ground-breaking project that uses GPS-satellite tracking to monitor and map the migration of sharks. Nick Glass joins research team leader Chris Fischer on board his latest expedition off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to witness the team capture a shark, tag it and then release it as part of their on-going quest to understand this mysterious creature.

At Harvard University, Glass meets a leading shark expert who is pioneering innovative research into the hydrodynamic properties of the planet’s most efficient water navigator in the hope that we may one day be able to replicate its natural technology in swimwear for Olympic athletes.

Travelling in the 21st century can feel like a maddeningly hectic experience, but it needn’t be that way. This month’s ‘CNN Business Traveller’ shows how to keep in order, build in downtime and steer clear of the ‘busy trap’

Host Richard Quest speaks to a variety of organisational gurus including Oprah Winfrey’s time management expert Julie Morgenstern and Tom Stuker, who has amassed over 10 million air miles. Quest also meets writer Tim Kreider, author of much talked-about New York Times article ‘The Busy Trap’, who is convinced we are all addicted to being busy.

Also on the programme, super-efficient packing whizz Anne McAlpin shows how to get the most out of a suitcase and demonstrates some techniques for relaxation which can be used on the road. Quest also receives a reading from ‘travel psychic’ Linda Lauren – will his future journeys be smooth sailing or does she foresee turbulent times ahead?

One man who’s managed to streamline his own travel experience is Hollywood star John Travolta, a certified pilot who’s transformed his home into an airport terminal, Leone Lakhani caught up with him in Dubai.
