CNN’s Edythe McNamee wins Gaby Rado Award at Amnesty International Media Awards

London, 12th June 2013: Last night, CNN Digital journalist Edythe McNamee took home the Gaby Rado Award at the Amnesty International Media Awards for the web feature Mauritania: Slavery’s Last Stronghold. The Gaby Rado Award acknowledges emerging journalists who have covered national or international human rights stories in broadcast, online or print media.

Mauritania: Slavery’s Last Stronghold, a CNN Freedom Project feature, reveals the shocking extent of slavery in modern Mauritania. The judges remarked that the piece “broke new ground with a haunting, powerful story that needed to be told”.

Peter Bale, VP & General Manager, CNN Digital, said: “Mauritania: Slavery’s Last Stronghold  was part of CNN’s commitment to the Freedom Project which demonstrates CNN has been prepared to be an advocate not just a reporter in exposing modern day slavery. We’re proud to see Edythe recognised for her excellent work on this outstanding report”.
