CNN Latino Continues to Expand in Key Markets

New Affiliation Agreement in New York, Orlando, Tampa and Phoenix Expand the Programming Block’s Reach

CNN Latino, the Spanish-language programming block custom-made for the U.S. Hispanic market, is expanding to New York, Orlando, Tampa and Phoenix, it was announced today by Cynthia Hudson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN en Español and Hispanic Strategy for CNN/U.S. With the addition of these four new markets to its existing presence in Los Angeles, CNN Latino programming will now be available in markets that represent about a quarter of U.S. Hispanic Households.

CNN Latino’s broad spectrum of programming covering news, lifestyle, documentary, talk and debate represents an alternative to traditional Hispanic networks, and it will now be available on WBQM Channel 3 in New York, New York; WATV Channel 47 in Orlando, Florida; WTAM Channel 30 in Tampa, Florida; and Channel 44 in Phoenix, Arizona.  As part of its expansion plan, CNN Latino has partnered with TMA-TIG, LLC to develop alliances with key Hispanic television stations in east coast markets and CNN Latino has partnered with Lotus Communications to develop its alliance with Channel 44 in Phoenix.

“We are so fortunate to be in a strategic partnership with TMA-TIG and their first group of stations, which will allow for a rapid expansion of the CNN Latino branded programming block across the east coast of the U.S., and to have a relationship with Lotus Communications in their heritage Phoenix station,” said Hudson. “We believe that CNN Latino programming is a great alternative to the current offering of Hispanic broadcast content in the U.S.”

CNN Latino in New York WBQM-LD Channel 3

CNN Latino signed with WBQM-LD Channel 3, a low-power television station in New York. The New York market is the second-largest Hispanic market with 1,360,660 Hispanic TV households that account for 18.4 % of total households. The joint venture will allow Channel 3, owned by TMA-TIG, to carry the CNN Latino eight-hour programming block from 3-11 p.m. (ET), as well as its current mix of local production and programming from Latin American partners, including shows from ColorVisión Channel 9 in the Dominican Republic, Jorge Barón Televisión in Colombia and RBC Televisión in Perú, currently packaged under the BuenaVision brand which provides family-oriented entertainment content.  Channel 3 will have carriage on some cable systems by the end of 2013.

“We are very excited to be partners with CNN Latino in this venture. The local audience is key to the development of any media franchise in this changing market. Our production expertise combined with CNN Latino’s high quality and relevant programming will certainly make CNN Latino in New York a channel of choice among Hispanic households looking for news, actuality, and information about their city, the country and the world,” said Luis Isaias, President of WBQM-LD Channel 3 and a partner in TMA-TIG.

CNN Latino programming will broadcast from 3-11 p.m. (ET), as well as local station programming and other BuenaVision content.

In Tampa, CNN Latino will be carried on WTAM Chanel 30, a low power station owned by SIMA Communications of Tampa LLC, and covers the area of Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Sarasota, Zephyrhills, Brandon and Riverview. “For many years, the Central Florida region has been anxiously waiting to watch high-quality Hispanic television outside of the traditional novellas, dramas and game shows which narrowly defines the interests of Hispanics. CNN Latino is like a lifesaver, bringing quality, entertaining and informational television content for the growing and powerful Hispanic-American community and empowering them with more variety of content. For us at SIMA Communications, this is a reason for celebration and pride to be a part of this historic beginning of CNN Latino, which promises to become one of the most important Hispanic broadcast options in the U.S.,” said Francisco Moll, SIMA Communications Operations Manager and Business Partner of Tampa.
