Don Riddell speaks to Rafa Nadal in Mexico
In March’s edition of ‘Open Court’, host Pat Cash is on the sidelines of the Sony Open in Miami – a tournament which attracts the best players in the world, all vying for the prestigious hard court title.
One of the competitors hoping for a victory in Miami is 11-time grand slam champion, Rafa Nadal (pictured, right) who sits down with CNN sports correspondent Don Riddell (pictured, left) for a one-on-one interview. Ahead of his appearance at the Mexican Open, the tennis superstar talks candidly about his recent injury and recovery, his comeback and why Roland Garros means so much to him. Riddell also gets to see how Nadal unwinds between tournaments, jet skiing and relaxing on the beach.
Also this month, ‘Open Court’ travels to Krakow, Poland for an exclusive interview with another Miami hopeful – Women’s world number four, Aga Radwanska. The programme gets a firsthand look at how Aga trains, sees the sights of her hometown and joins the player for a fine Polish meal. ‘Open Court’ also meets Aga’s younger sister Urszula, who is also moving up the WTA rankings. Both of them are hopeful that their success will inspire future Polish tennis stars.

Continuing CNN’s portfolio of environmental programming, ‘Going Green: Oceans’ is a special week of coverage and reports, which set out to explain the impact of climate change on the world’s oceans.
CNN’s special correspondent Philippe Cousteau hosts a special programme investigating the rapid deterioration of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Warming waters and acidification are not only damaging the reef’s fragile ecosystem but also pose a threat to the lives of the people who live along these shorelines. Some 500 million people depend on the coral reefs which provide food, income and tourism worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

This month, ‘Winning Post’ heads to Qatar for the most eagerly-awaited meeting in the peninsula’s racing calendar: the Emir Sword & Trophy.
Already known for its opulent hotels and resorts, Qatar is aiming to become a key destination for the horse racing industry and has developed a 6-star luxury stud complex. Host Francesca Cumani is given a tour of the Uum Qarn stables, which contain everything one would expect in a palace specifically designed for four-legged athletes, from treadmill, to swimming pool and solarium.
Some top riders seem to enjoy the lifestyle in Qatar and some have decided to make Doha their home. French jockey David Bouland made the move 15 years ago and ‘Winning Post’ meets him as he goes about his everyday business.
While it’s easy to get distracted by the luxury, neither jockeys nor trainers forget what they come here to do: win races. In a country where betting is not allowed, finishing second is the same as finishing last. Cumani meets Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani who shares his passion for racing. The Al Thani family already set the tone by acquiring the most valuable facilities and horses, and this year the fifth son of the Emir demanded an impromptu race – within 24 hours. A real challenge for the race track manager who has to maintain the turf and turn the desert green!
