With 2.5 million orphans as defined by UNICEF, Uganda has become a prime destination for those looking to adopt children. While other adoption hotspots, like Russia and China, have clamped down on or even moved to ban foreign adoptions, for Americans Uganda has maintained relatively lax laws. This has led to a significant boom in international adoptions.

World’s Untold Stories: Adopting Africa’ follows the fortunes of Zach and Philip, two young Ugandan boys brought to America by the Harding family. While these children may be afforded more opportunities than they would in the country of their birth, many in Uganda wonder what they might lose by being raised abroad. From the slums of Kampala to the frozen landscape of Minnesota in winter, this powerful programme examines the highs and lows of adopting from Africa.

In March, ‘Inside the Middle East’ explores the diverse natural environments of two Gulf nations – Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Leone Lakhani hosts the show from Oman, meeting several Omanis working to preserve the country’s unspoiled landscapes. Omanis are increasingly finding innovative ways to go green. ‘Inside the Middle East’ meets two activists who are doing just that – by freezing themselves in preparation for a research trip to the Antarctic.

In the UAE, one of the driest countries on the planet, Lakhani stumbles upon a rare lake which recently sprouted up in the middle of the desert. Experts say it formed as a side-effect of increased desalination usage in the Gulf, a process which provides a heavy flow of water at a hefty environmental price.

Also in the deserts of the UAE, ‘Inside the Middle East’ visits the annual Al-Dhafra Festival, an annual pageant featuring camels as contestants, which proves, beyond doubt, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
This month’s show also celebrates cinema in the region, meeting two filmmakers whose documentaries about the Israel-Palestine conflict were nominated for Academy Awards. Sara Sidner interviews both directors to get their take on the possibility of a lasting peace in the Middle East, and she also meets Khalid Al-Zadjali, one of Oman’s only film directors.

This month’s ‘Living Golf’ features one of the sport’s most exciting young prospects – rising star Thorbjorn Olesen. In just three years the Danish player has gone from the Nordic League to the European Tour, and now – he’s in the world top 50. The programme travels to Olesen’s native Copenhagen, as he prepares for the World Golf Championships and his debut at the Masters.

Ryder Cup hero Martin Kaymer gives host Shane O’Donoghue some more shotmaking advice and ‘Living Golf’ travels to Florida, to investigate how the American golf industry is working to pull itself out of the global recession.

Also, the programme meets three-time European Tour winner Matteo Manassero. At 19-years-old, he’s the youngest ever player to appear in the Masters – and he has some advice for the golfer who will next hold this record!

In 1983, at the height of South Africa’s segregated apartheid era, a team of young black cricketers from the West Indies arrived in Johannesburg. They had agreed to take part in the ‘rebel tours’ – a tournament in South Africa against the host nation’s all-white team.

When the team returned it was to a betrayed and outraged Caribbean. Each man was banned from the sport, unwelcome at home, and branded for life as a rebel and an outcast. Now, for the first time ever, some of the players are speaking out on the 30th anniversary of their trip. For most, it is too painful to relive; for all, the repercussions still resonate to this day.

‘World Sport Presents: Branded a Rebel’ shines a light on one of the most controversial events in sport history – and the consequences of taking part in it.

Airs within ‘Quest Means Business’ on Thursday 14 March at 1900 GMT / 2000 CET
Duration: 5 minutes

Presented by Nick Glass and filmed on location, ‘Make, Create, Innovate’ showcases the pioneers who have revolutionised the field in which they work. Each segment explores the origin of their ‘eureka’ moment, whether the result of a happy coincidence or years of trial and error experimentation; it also reveals the key economic or social value of those inventions – a patented concept that has transformed an industrial sector or peoples’ lives.

In this edition, ‘Make, Create, Innovate’ meets Gavriel Iddan, the inventor of the Pill Cam, a small camera the size of a vitamin tablet that can take images of the human digestive tract. Nick Glass swallows the device and finds out how, before this invention, there was up to six metres of human intestine that doctors were unable to view.
