CNN and Google launch Campaign Explorer

With Election Day upon us, voters will be heading to the polls.  CNN and Google are helping users understand this final stage of the campaign by launching the Campaign Explorer, which tracks candidate and campaign activity.

The Campaign Explorer allows users to visualize ad spending, fundraising, and candidate travel from the presidential campaigns on CNN’s electoral map. Users can dive into data for a state, compare multiple states, and then save and share snapshots.

CNN journalists provided multiple types of data for the Campaign Explorer including money spent on TV ads, fundraising, CNN Poll of Polls on the horserace and a CNN count of campaign events in various states and cities.  Google developed the interactive, using the latest web technologies in HTML5 to present this data in an engaging way.

CNN Quotes on Campaign Explorer:

“CNN’s Campaign Explorer gives users a way to analyze the hard data behind the 2012 Presidential campaign – where the candidates are traveling, where they’re raising money and how they’re spending it on TV ads.  This interactive empowers users to form their own opinions about the strategy and tactics in the race for the White House.”

-Manav Tanneeru, sr. producer of interactives for CNN Digital

“Transparency is our goal for the 2012 Campaign Explorer, and for CNN’s coverage of the Election overall.  Because of Google’s civic mission as a bipartisan resource of the 2012 Election, we felt they’d be a great partner for developing this interactive.”

-Rob Smith, product manager for CNN Digital
