Eliot Spitzer on Superstorm Sandy: "The preparations have not been made..."

On a special edition of Amanpour, former New York governor Eliot Spitzer joined Christiane Amanpour to discuss the aftermath and the coordinated federal and state disaster response in the wake of the destructive North American "superstorm," Hurricane Sandy.  Spitzer says that politicians of both parties, on state and federal levels, have not made investments in long-term improvements in critical infrastructure that are necessary, but very expensive, in order to minimize the impact of a strong storm to the low lying coastal areas of the United States.  Spitzer also points out that global warming was not discussed during any of the recent presidential debates.

"When you speak of things in hypotheticals, people discount the reality – after this storm, perhaps, public opinion will be galvanized...the way Katrina in New Orleans helped," Spitzer added.  He included his own tenure as Governor of New York, in his criticism that politicians at all levels do not make environmental policy the priority that it should be, due to competing fiscal priorities.

The full transcript for this interview will be posted here.  This special edition of Amanpour aired Wednesday, Oct. 31 on CNN International at 4:00pmET with a replay at 6:00pmET in the U.S.   In Europe, Amanpour airs on CNN Internatioanl at 21:00 CET, with a replay at 23:00 CET.

Michael Holmes reports from New Jersey's barrier islands

CNN’s Michael Holmes toured New Jersey’s barrier islands Wednesday, reporting on the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy.

“We’re the first of the media to get on to these barrier islands. I’m on Ocean Beach right now – I’ve got the ocean to my left and to my right is just as far as you can see damaged beach houses,” says Holmes. “There are sinkholes – we’ve noticed four or five of those, entire houses in the middle of the street…and for several blocks in from the beach, things are covered in sand.

PMT: Chris Christie on supporting Obama during "Sandy"

Tonight "Piers Morgan Tonight" welcomed Chris Christie as the show continued coverage of "Sandy," the storm's aftermath and recovery efforts.

The Governor of New Jersey's state was amongst those hit the hardest, with massive devastation.

A staunch Republican, and an endorser of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Christie has praised President Barack Obama for his support this week after the storm and ahead of Obama's visit to NJ tomorrow:

"This is much more important than any election, Piers. This is the livelihood of the people in my state," says the 50-year-old who was born in Newark. "When the president does things that deserve praise, I will give him praise. And when the president does things that deserve scorn, I'll give him scorn."
