Doctor who treated Cambodian children “never” saw enterovirus progress like this; believes it’s something else
Tonight on AC360, CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports from Cambodia on a mysterious disease killing children there as doctors search for answers.
Gupta spoke with officials from WHO and Dr. Beat Richner who heads Kathan Boht Hospital which treated most of the children. In the report, Dr. Richner shows Gupta lung x-rays taken from one child 5 hours apart that show how quickly the disease progresses. Asked whether he had ever seen enterovirus, which was found in 15 of 24 samples taken from the children, lead to that, Dr. Richner said “never.” He continued to say he believed it was something else “but we have no proof. We must look for it.”
