In November Future Cities heads toMoscow. Twenty years after the fall of communism, there is another major upheaval on the horizon – this time in urban planning. This giant metropolis is alreadyEurope’s most populous city, but swelling inhabitant numbers mean it has grown too big for its infrastructure. Traffic has brought the massive inner-city highways to a near standstill, and public transport is failing to tempt Muscovites out of their cars. What’s the solution? Host Richard Quest investigates how the city authorities want to expand the capital to more than double its current size, and eventually move government offices and businesses out of the historical centre. The programme also explores Moscow’s growing attachment to its pre-Bolshevik past. Both in architecture and entertainment, this is a city in the midst of a Tsarist revival. Quest meets the people and explores the places at the centre of this rebirth, providing a rare look at the giant restoration project occurring inside The Kremlin.

It is also the starting point of the multi-billion-dollar Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline through which almost all of Azeri oil and gas is pumped to world markets.

The Gateway looks at the revival of the Silk Road and howAzerbaijan is weaving a new route. A huge project is set to resurrect this historic transport corridor and bolster modern day trade, placingBaku at the centre, once more, of global trading highways.
