Future Cities in September uncovers Beirut, a city rising from the ashes of civil war and now experiencing a rebirth. Host Richard Quest (pictured) investigates different aspects of the metropolis, exploring the delicate interplay between renewal and rebuilding, and the preservation of Beirut’s unique charm and identity, that once led the city to be known as ‘Paris of the Middle East.’

The programme explores both old and new Beirut: the new waterfront which provides a view of past and future; the high hopes for the country’s tourism; the rejuvenation of an urban centre fuelling Lebanon’s real estate boom. Future Cities speaks to a raft of high profile guests including Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, to discuss the growing prospects for the city and the economy. Quest also meets with hoteliers, restaurateurs and those who have dedicated their lives to the preservation of their beloved city. From high rises to rich heritage, Beirut’s many facets span five millennia and it seems there are still many more to come.

This September, The Gateway visits Vladivostok, Russia.

This port city is Russia’s trading post with Asia, perched on a peninsula just a couple of hours drive from China and Korea, and 500 miles from Japan, Vladivostok has the potential to be Russia’s major gateway to nearby booming Asian economies. From cars to fish to coal – it all passes through Vladivostokon its way in and out of Russia, with goods making their way by sea, road and rail. Vladivostokis the terminus of the great Trans-Siberian railway – the world’s longest railway, and an economic spine running from Russia’s far east to west, snaking its way through seven time zones, carrying people and goods back to Moscow, and beyond. The geographic importance of Vladivostokis not underestimated by Moscow: the city will host 2012’s APEC summit, as Russian leaders are keen to expand their trade links with eastern economies. The Gateway looks at what comes in and out of Vladivostok, and explores how the crucial relationship between port and railway feeds Russia’s landscape.
