SANJAY GUPTA MD – BATTLEFIELD BREAKTHROUGHS (PART II)

In the second of a two-part special, as the U.S. prepares for the troop drawdown in Afghanistan, CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports with CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr on the medical breakthroughs developed on the battlefields.  This special includes profiles of Dr. John Holcomb, formerly the Commander of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Trauma Consultant for the Army Surgeon General, before joining the University of Texas Health Science Center where he oversaw the care and treatment of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ).  Dr. Gupta also interviews USAF pilot Rob Waldman about overcoming claustrophobia, and Starr reports from the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where Maj. Joseph Dubose (USAF), Col. David Powers (former Director C-STARS Baltimore, Ret.) train doctors like Lt. Col. Allan Ward (USAF) and Maj. John Renshaw (USAF) and nurses who are headed to Afghanistan as they sharpen their trauma experience for practice in war theater.  Maj. DuBose describes this exchange of knowledge as a century-old practice of battle-experienced physicians returning from war with very useful insights for civilian medical care.
