SXSW Panel, Part Deaux: It’s Not TV, It’s Social TV

It wouldn’t be SXSW without long lines and spirited conversation. At this morning’s panel “It’s Not TV, It’s Social TV,” the line was a nightmare, and a ton of people were turned away because the room wasn’t big enough. So a group of “rebels” outside of the meeting room decided to form an impromptu discussion on the topic that proved to be extremely dynamic  – but unfortunately it was cut short. So, in the spirit of continuing that conversation,  CNN is hosting the original panelists, including CNN.com’s Lila King and reps from Twitter, The Travel Channel and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, TONIGHT at 7p at the CNN Grill.

The first 25 Twitter users to follow and at-reply @CNNSXSW will be invited into the CNN Grill for the evening to watch the panel in person, as well as enjoy free food, drink and wifi. Those people not credentialed for the CNN Grill will still be able to watch the panel on monitors outside the of the Grill on 3rd Street. Additionally, for those not lucky enough to be in Austin, the panel will be live streamed on CNN.com and the CNN Apps for iPhone and iPod Touch, iPad and Android tablet.

PANELISTS:

– Chloe Sladden, Director of Media Partnerships at Twitter

– Fred Graver, Sr VP at The Travel Channel

– Gavin Purcell, Supervising Producer for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

– Lila King, Participation Director at CNN.com

– Moderator: Timothy Shey, Pres/Co-Founder at  Next New Networks

PANEL DESCRIPTION: How is social media changing the TV experience for good? Over the past ten years, we’ve seen television become truly interactive, from SMS voting on American Idol to real-time audience feedback via Twitter and Facebook becoming a part of everything from CNN to Oprah to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. At the same time, web series have built millions of viewers on places like YouTube, iTunes, and XBox Live. Now a new wave of always-connected mobile apps, set-top boxes, and gaming platforms are making entertainment more social, location-aware, and connected than ever. Our panel of producers of hit TV shows and top web platforms will talk about how they’re enabling social viewing and collaboration between producers, stars, and audiences in real time to create new kinds of TV experiences.
